Der Preis von Wolle -1814 in Schottland

Ist jetzt nicht wirklich nen Blogbeitrag wert aber ich vergnüge mich gerade mit nem alten Report aus Schottland. Interessanterweise liest sich der Text gar nicht altmodisch. Man muß aber dauernd Kopfrechnen!

Wieviel Heu bekommt ein Schaf pro Tag?

it appears that the medium price of white (unsmeared) wool, for a number of years past, may be about 8s. 8 d. per stone,” of 16 lb. of 23 ounces, or 4½ d per pound avoirdupois

Wenn man das jetzt noch umrechnet in heutigen Geldwert bezogen auf Löhne, kommt man auf ca. £38 pro Vlies vom Scottish blackface. Man kann aber auch anders umrechnen auf heutigen Geldwert und landet zwischen £4,40 und £124. Da ist es auch egal, wieviel Geld pro wieviel Gewicht das damals war...

These sheep were first introduced into the West Highlands of Scotland, about the year 1762, and were soon found far more profitable than cattle for the higher parts of the country. It does not belong to this part of the work to give any account of the change which this stock produced upon the population of the Highlands, [...] One thing is indisputable; a much greater value of mutton and wool, than of beef, was speedily obtained from the higher grounds. The best interests of the nation at large, as well as of proprietors, were therefore promoted by this change.

Das klingt ja schon so, als ob der Autor zumindest bemerkt hat, daß da ganze Landstriche entvölkert wurden... darüber zu schreiben traut er sich nicht... Das ist ein Report an die Regierung. Und vorsichtshalber betont er noch, daß das ja zum Besten der Nation und der Landbesitzer ist...
